An animation created by compiling all the sightings of a famous humpback whale, by the name of Prop Mom AKA Barcode. This female humpback whale survived getting hit by a ship, leaving large vertical gashes down her dorsal ridge. These scars make her incredibly easy to identify at a glance and have allowed us to track her journey up and down California’s coastline since 2013. All the data used to create this animation was gained through the public accessible Happy Whale database.

An illustration for a fellow graduate student, showcasing his work on bioacoustics. This illustration was used to explain that the two species could be distinct from one another via their click calls even though they used the same frequencies. The analogy was that the patterns were distinct enough from one another: like two football teams using the same colors but different patterned jerseys so the audience could still tell the players apart. 2024
